Book Review: Dying to be Me by Anita Moorjani

Anita Moorjani’s book is an honest account of how it took cancer and her near death experience (NDE) to understand that in order to love others, you must learn how to love yourself first, deeply and honestly. As the title suggests, she had to die to learn how to be truly her, how it’s ok to be her, and to let go of all society pressures and rules … because in the end, it really doesn’t matter. What matters in the end is who you really were and if you lived this gift of life in joy, being the amazing true being that you truly are.

It is actually an amazing book that moves you, shakes your universe and makes you question everything that you took for granted.
There were times I would sit down and just ponder on her words because the depth of it would stir something deep within me, making me acknowledge things that needed to be changed.

Here’s an article that appeared recently. Read it and you might be tempted to get the book.

I have always been scared of heights.  Maybe because I used to be the kind of person that always had her feet firmly planted on the ground.  The Earth was my familiar playground. I knew the rules here. I knew what to expect. So when I put ‘Jump out of a plane’ on my bucket list, people thought I was crazy.

I remember standing on the edge of the plane door and looking at the city and sea below, and thinking this is really weird! I am literally jumping into something I have no damn clue about, and with someone who I met 10 mins ago and is strapped to me.  I am trusting a total and complete stranger with my life.  I am actually leaving the old safe Me behind.

You think that change is hard, leaving the old and familiar behind involves you giving up a lot. But it is probably the most alive you will ever feel.

As soon as I jumped, my sense of reality literally changed. The experience of the wind blasting makes you feel the power of the Wind God. Once the jump is over, we floated around in the atmosphere for about 5 to 7 minutes. The peace as you hang in mid air,  the clouds above and below you, the birds flying past you minding their own business, the tranquility, the view … it is simply beautiful.

For the first time I felt connected and in awe of the sky. The whole universe not just the ground and sea. I was a little beautiful speck in this gorgeous huge universe. So why am I limiting myself to the old, the comfortable when in reality I have the whole universe to play with?

What if we didn’t give so much importance to safe boundaries? What incredible change would we then allow into our lives?

Change. Let go of safe. Jump into something new. Become alive again.

The here and now …

“God will guide you, because everything you ever experienced or will experience is in the here and now.  The world is being created and destroyed in this very moment.  Whoever you met will reappear, whoever you lost will return. Don’t betray the grace that was bestowed upon you.  Understand what is going on inside you and you will understand what is going on inside everyone else.” – Aleph by Paulo Coelho

I liked that! So many little things wrapped up in one quote!

Everything we do experience is in the here and now … not in the past (which is done!) and not in the future (which we cannot ‘see’ or ‘know’).  Yet we never give any importance to what is happening ‘now’ 🙂 we look behind, we look ahead but we forget to live now!

A lot of the holistic healing techniques or even meditations concentrate on teaching us on seeing and understanding what is going on inside us.  We always try to analyze others, try to figure out their ‘motives’ … but rarely do we sit and reflect inside ourselves.  The key to understanding or obtaining peace lies inside us, within us, in our deepest depths. Once we begin to understand who we are, what we are, only then will we actually begin to understand the world around us! 🙂
