Captains of our Soul
For the last few weeks, I have been stuck on 2 paintings. In my head, something was missing. The last week, as i sat and looked at them, I knew it was time to break out of the way I use the paints.
So I watched loads of videos and started to experiment. This small painting is the result. I have done this using a kitchen spatula, water and sponge. No brushes, no knives, no drawings. Only 5 colors were used – turquoise green, pthalo blue, white, black and a touch of violet.
As I kept doing this painting, one of my favorite poems kept coming to mind – ‘Invictus’. The poem talks about how through everything we go through – the good and the bad – we are the Captains of our Soul.
Only we have the power to steer the ship of our life in a direction we want. Only we have the vulnerability to understand the emotions we go through. Only we have the power to let our thoughts flow through or to sabotage our lives. Only we have the power to stand up for ourselves in the face of pain and anguish. To expect anyone else to do it for us is foolishness. We are truly the Captains of our Soul. And only we have the power to change our destiny. And the little anchor drawn on the bottom right hand corner is a reminder of that.
Here is the poem. Hope it inspires you as much as it does me.
BY WILLIAM ERNEST HENLEY
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
